How to visit the Forte de Copacabana: Everything you need to know

At the southern end of Copacabana Beach, the Forte de Copacabana is a former coastal fortress that now operates as the Museu Histórico do Exército e Forte de Copacabana (Army Historical Museum and Copacabana Fort). Built to defend the entrance to Guanabara Bay in the early 20th century, the fort has been preserved as a museum where visitors can explore underground galleries, military exhibitions, historic artillery and one of Rio de Janeiro's best coastal viewpoints.
Today, a visit includes much more than the museum itself. Your ticket also gives you access to the fortifications, the famous gun emplacements overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, walking paths around the headland and two waterfront cafés. Whether you're interested in Brazilian history, military engineering or simply want a different perspective of Copacabana and Ipanema, the fort is an easy half day addition to any Rio itinerary.

The Forte de Copacabana is open:
Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays: 10:00 am to 7:00 pm
Closed: Mondays
The cafés inside the complex remain open until 8:00 pm.

What to expect
Unlike a traditional museum, visiting Forte de Copacabana is a mix of history, architecture and some of the best coastal views in Rio.
After entering through the main gate, you can wander around the large open-air grounds before exploring the museum buildings inside the fort.
Allow around 1.5 hour for your visit, or more if you decide to stop for a meal or coffee.
Explore the historic Forte de Copacabana
The highlight of the visit is exploring the interior of the historic fort. The galleries include information about the fort's construction, Brazil's coastal defences and military history. Unlike many museums in Rio, much of the information is also available in English, making it much easier for international visitors.
As you walk through the fort, you'll pass through a variety of preserved rooms, including:

Officers' meeting rooms
Administrative offices
The hospital
Bathrooms
The engine room
Ammunition storage areas
One of the most interesting parts of the visit is being able to look inside one of the enormous artillery cannons and see the shells that were once used with it.

The large armoured gun turrets overlooking the Atlantic Ocean are among the fort's most recognisable features.
From here you'll get panoramic views across Copacabana Beach, Ipanema, Arpoador and Sugarloaf Mountain. It's one of the best photo spots in the city.
Visit the historical Military Museum
Included with your ticket is the Museu Histórico do Exército, which displays military artefacts, uniforms, weapons and exhibitions covering the history of the Brazilian Army and the fort itself.
The museum helps explain the role the fort played in defending Rio de Janeiro during the twentieth century.
Eat at one of the waterfront cafés
Many visitors come to Forte de Copacabana just for the cafés.
There are two cafés inside the complex serving breakfast, lunch, coffee, desserts and drinks. Both have outdoor seating overlooking the ocean, making them one of the most scenic places in Copacabana to stop for a meal.
The cafés are open to anyone who has paid the entrance fee to the fort.
Accessibility
Most of the outdoor areas are accessible, although some parts of the historic fort include stairs and uneven surfaces due to the original military construction.
Free toilets are available inside the complex.
Is Forte de Copacabana worth visiting?
If you're looking for more than just a museum, Forte de Copacabana is well worth adding to your Rio itinerary.
The admission price is inexpensive, the views are beautiful, and the combination of museums, historic buildings and waterfront cafés makes it easy to spend a couple of hours here.
Even if you're not particularly interested in military history, the scenery alone makes the visit worthwhile.
