Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro: The best areas and neighbourhoods for tourists

  • 11 min read

Choosing where to stay in Rio de Janeiro can shape your entire experience of the city. Rio is not a place with one central tourist district. Instead, each neighbourhood has its own rhythm, atmosphere, and lifestyle. Two areas might look similar on the surface, but feel completely different once you arrive.

People relax on a sunny beach in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, with umbrellas, crystal blue water, and distant mountains. Palm trees line the promenade; vibrant summer mood.

Along the coast, neighbourhoods such as Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon revolve around the beach. Life moves between the sand, the promenade, and the local neighbourhood bars. Days start with coffee and a swim, and often end with drinks at a boteco.

Move a little inland and the atmosphere changes. Botafogo has become one of the city’s best areas for botecos and casual restaurants, while hillside Santa Teresa offers historic streets, viewpoints, and a creative atmosphere.

Then there is the historic core of the city around Centro and Lapa, where colonial buildings and museums coexist with samba bars and lively nightlife.

Where should you stay in Rio de Janeiro?

In this guide you will discover the best neighbourhoods to stay in Rio de Janeiro, including the vibe of each area, what there is to do nearby, where to eat and drink, typical accommodation prices, and what to expect in terms of safety.

If you are visiting Rio de Janeiro on a longer trip, I recommend staying in more than one area during your trip, so that you get ot experience different parts of the city.

Click on the neighbourhoosd below for a summary of each area, and choose the one that is right for you.

Copacabana

If it is your first time in Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana is one of the most welll-known and easiest places to stay. The neighbourhood stretches along a four kilometre curve of sand between the Atlantic Ocean and steep granite hills. The iconic black and white wave promenade designed by Roberto Burle Marx runs the full length of the beach.

The Vibe in Copacabana

Copacabana feels busy and social. It is one of the most densely populated areas in Rio and the beach stays busy from early morning until evening. Locals run along the promenade at sunrise, vendors rent umbrellas and chairs during the day, and groups of friends gather with beers as the sun sets. It feels less polished than some nearby neighbourhoods but it is lively and easy to settle into.

The main attraction is Copacabana Beach, where you can rent a chair and spend the afternoon swimming or people watching. At the southern end of the beach you can visit Forte de Copacabana, a historic fort with coastal views and a small museum. From here it is easy to walk toward Ipanema.

Food and drink

Copacabana has a large number of botecos, bakeries, juice bars, and casual restaurants. Prices are generally lower than Ipanema or Leblon, and it is easy to find simple places for a quick meal or cold beer.

Price range  in Copacabana

Accommodation ranges from hostels and budget hotels to luxury hotels. It is one of the more affordable beachside areas in Rio, and is generally a little cheaper than Ipanema and Leblon.

Is it Safe to stay in Copacabana

Safety is similar to other busy parts of the city. The beachfront has constant foot traffic and regular police presence during the day. However, basic precautions are needed. Do not take valuables to the beach, do not leave your belongings unattended, and travel by Uber at night rather than walking.

Ipanema

Ipanema is one of the most sought after places to stay in Rio de Janeiro. Located between Copacabana and Leblon, it combines the iconic Ipanema Beach, walkable tree-lined streets, and trendy restaurants and bars.

The vibe in Ipanema

Ipanema is organised, walkable, and has a bit more of a hipster vibe than Copacabana. Streets are lined with apartment buildings, boutiques, cafés, and juice bars, and everything is within a short walk of the beach. The atmosphere is relaxed during the day and social in the evening.

Things to do in Ipanema

The main attraction is Ipanema Beach, one of the most famous beaches in Brazil. The beach is divided into numbered lifeguard posts called postos, and each section attracts a different crowd. At the western end you will find Arpoador, a rocky point between Ipanema and Copacabana and a great place to watch the sunset. The neighbourhood is also a convenient base for exploring Leblon and Copacabana.

Basic precautions are still needed. Do not take valuables to the beach, do not leave your belongings unattended, and travel by Uber at night rather than walking.

Leblon

Leblon is one of the more bougie areas of Rio de Janeiro. Located immediately west of Ipanema, Leblon is widely considered Rio’s most affluent beach neighbourhood. The streets are quieter, the buildings are more exclusive, and the overall atmosphere is noticeably calmer than nearby Copacabana.

The vibe in Leblon

Leblon has a residential and upscale feel. Compared with the crowds and energy of Copacabana and the social buzz of Ipanema, Leblon feels slower and more local. Families walk dogs along the streets, locals meet friends at cafés, and evenings revolve around long dinners rather than busy bars. It is still a beach neighbourhood, but it feels less touristy and more like a place where people actually live.

The main attraction is Leblon Beach, which tends to be quieter and less crowded than the beaches further east. At the western end of the neighbourhood you will find Mirante do Leblon, a scenic viewpoint looking back over the coastline toward Ipanema and Copacabana.

Leblon also sits close to the base of Morro Dois Irmãos, one of the most famous viewpoints in Rio. Many travellers hike here at sunrise for panoramic views of the city’s beaches and mountains.

Food and drink in Leblon

Leblon has some of the best restaurants in Riofde Janeiro . The neighbourhood is known for high quality Brazilian cuisine, seafood restaurants, and refined cocktail bars. Dining here tends to be slower and more restaurant focused compared with the casual botecos common in Copacabana.

Prices in Leblon

Leblon is one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in Rio to stay. Accommodation is mostly high end apartments and boutique hotels, and budget options are limited. Restaurants and bars are also generally more expensive than in nearby neighbourhoods.

Basic precautions are still needed. Do not take valuables to the beach, do not leave your belongings unattended, and travel by Uber at night rather than walking.

Leme

Tucked against the mountain at the eastern end of Copacabana, Leme feels like a quiet extension of Copacabana Beach. While Copacabana is busy and crowded, Leme is smaller and more residential. The beach is technically the same stretch of sand, but the atmosphere here feels quieter.

The vibe in Leme

Leme has a relaxed and local feel. The neighbourhood only covers a few streets between the ocean and the hillside, which gives it a compact and community oriented atmosphere. Compared with Copacabana’s constant movement, Leme feels slower and quieter. Families live here, neighbours know each other, and the beach tends to attract locals rather than large numbers of tourists.

Things to do in Leme

The main draw is Praia do Leme, the section of sand at the eastern end of Copacabana. It is usually less crowded than the central part of Copacabana Beach, making it a more relaxed place to spend the afternoon.

At the far end of the beach you can walk up to Forte Duque de Caxias, a historic fort built into the headland. A short trail leads to the top of the hill, where you get wide views back across Copacabana and the coastline.

Food and drink in Leme

Leme has a smaller and more local food scene than Copacabana. You will mostly find neighbourhood botecos, bakeries, and casual restaurants. Food here is more traditional. For a larger range of restaurants and nightlife, it is easy to walk a few minutes into Copacabana.

Prices in Leme

Accommodation in Leme is similarly priced to Copcabana. There are fewer hotels overall, but many short term apartments and a handful of mid range hotels near the beach.

Is it safe to stay in Leme

Safety in Leme is comparable to Copacabana. Bbasic precautions are needed. Do not take valuables to the beach, do not leave your belongings unattended, and travel by Uber at night rather than walking.

Santa Teresa

Perched on the hills above downtown Rio, Santa Teresa feels completely different from the beach districts. Instead of high rise apartments and beachfront promenades, this neighbourhood is defined by winding streets, colonial era houses, and sweeping views over the city. It is one of Rio’s most historic and artistic areas.

The vibe in Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa has a bohemian and creative atmosphere. The neighbourhood has long attracted artists, musicians, and writers, and many of the old mansions have been converted into studios, guesthouses, and cultural spaces.

Things to do in Santa Teresa

One of the most famous experiences here is riding the historic Santa Teresa Tram, which crosses the Arcos da Lapa before climbing into the hills. Santa Teresa is also known for its viewpoints, art studios, and cocktail bars. You can visit Parque das Ruínas, a restored mansion with panoramic views over the city, or explore the colourful stairway Escadaria Selarón which connects Santa Teresa to Lapa.

Food and drink in Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa has a small but well regarded dining scene. Restaurants tend to be independent, creative, and more upscale than the casual botecos found elsewhere in the city. Food is therefore on the more expensive side - though you can absolutely still find a cheap lunch if you look around. Many bars and restaurants sit on terraces with beautiful views across Rio.

Prices in Santa Teresa

Accommodation mostly consists of boutique hotels and historic homes converted into guesthouses. Prices vary widely depending on the property.

Is it safe to stay in Santa Teresa

The main areas of Santa Teresa is often busy with tourists during the day, especially around the main streets and viewpoints. However, it's best to avoid walking around quiet areas and don't walk around at night, take an Uber instead.

Botafogo

Botafogo sits between downtown Rio and the beach districts, making it one of the most conveniently located neighbourhoods in the city. From here it is easy to reach Copacabana, Ipanema, Lapa, and Santa Teresa, which makes it a practical base for exploring multiple parts of Rio. While it does not have Rio’s most famous beaches, the nearby Flamengo Beach offers access to the ocean, with significantly less tourists and some beautiful scenery

The vibe in Botafogo

Botafogo feels urban, creative, and local. Compared with the tourist heavy energy of Copacabana and Ipanema, Botafogo has a more everyday city feel. The neighbourhood attracts students, young professionals, and locals who come here for the food and nightlife scene.

It is one of the most social neighbourhoods in Rio after dark, with streets filled with small botecos and live music.

Best places to stay in Botafogo

Best hostel in Botafogo:

Gaia Hostel - A social hostel with a bar and relaxed atmosphere located close to Botafogo’s restaurants and nightlife (see prices)

Best hotel in Botafogo:

Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro by Intercity - A stylish boutique hotel overlooking Botafogo Bay with a rooftop pool and views of Sugarloaf Mountain (see prices)

Things to do in Botafogo

The waterfront at Botafogo Beach looks directly across the bay toward Sugarloaf Mountain. While the water here is not great for swimming, it is still a scenic place to walk. Nearby, Flamengo Beach is popular for swimming, walking, cycling, and relaxing by the water. In the evenings, the local botecos come alive with live music, samba, and forro dancing.

Food and drink in Botafogo

Botafogo is one of the best neighbourhoods in Rio for bars and casual dining. The area is packed with botecos, craft beer bars, small restaurants, and late night food spots. Compared with the traditional bars of Copacabana or the upscale restaurants in Leblon, Botafogo feels more casual and local. It's a great place for bar hopping.

Prices in Botafogo

Accommodation in Botafogo is usually cheaper than Copacabana and Ipanema. The price of food and drink varies widely depending on your chosen bar, with both affordable and more up-scale options available.

Is it safe to stay in Botafogo

Botafogo is a busy residential and commercial neighbourhood and it is generally safe to walk around the main areas during the day time. Avoid quiet or empty streets. The main bar areas are also busy during the evenings, but it's best to take an Uber rather than walk around at night.

Lapa & Centro

The historic heart of Rio sits in Centro and Lapa. This area contains many of the city’s colonial buildings, museums, and historic landmarks. They are interesting places to visit while exploring Rio de Janeiro, but I personally would not recommend booking accommodation in these areas.

Busy city street with yellow taxis, pedestrians walking, and a bustling atmosphere. Historic buildings and palm trees line the background.

The vibe in Lapa & Centro

Centro and Lapa feel very different from the beach neighbourhoods. Instead of apartments near the ocean, the area is dominated by office buildings, historic architecture, and busy commercial streets. At night the atmosphere changes. Many parts of Centro become quiet once offices close, while Lapa transforms into one of Rio’s busiest nightlife districts.

Things to do in Lapa & Centro

Centro is where you will find some of Rio’s most important historic and cultural attractions. Highlights include the colourful tiled staircase Escadaria Selarón, the historic aqueduct Arcos da Lapa, and the ornate theatre Theatro Municipal.

Food and drink in Lapa & Centro

Lapa is famous for nightlife. The streets around the Arcos da Lapa fill with bars, street parties, and live samba venues most nights of the week. It is one of the most energetic places in the city for music and dancing.

During the day, Centro has many casual restaurants and traditional lunch spots catering to workers in the area.

Prices in Lapa & Centro

Accommodation in Centro and Lapa is usually cheaper than in other neighbourhoods - but there is a reason for this. The quality of accommodation is generally lower, and noise from the nearby bars can go on well into the morning. Safety is also a concern at night.

Is it safe to stay in  in Lapa & Centro

It is generally not recommended to walk around Centro & Lapa, aside from around the main tourist attractions. Even there, stay aware of your surroundings and take care of your belongings.

Lapa is lively after dark, but it is important to stay aware of your surroundings. Always take an Uber rather than walking at night, avoid dark or empty streets, and avoid going out with valuables.
